Out in the World: Advising LGBTQ+ Students in Education Abroad

This session explores best practices for advising LGBTQ+ students in education abroad, informed by recent research on the diverse experiences of LGBTQ+ students and effective advising approaches. Participants will gain insight into how LGBTQ+ students navigate identity while abroad and how advisors can foster more inclusive, affirming, and equity-minded advising environments. Drawing on themes from interviews and surveys with study abroad advisors and LGBTQ+ students, this presentation offers actionable strategies to improve advising effectiveness and strengthen support structures for LGBTQ+ students.
