SUMMARY:Beyond Safe and Unsafe: Queerness\, Power\, and Truth in Global Education
DESCRIPTION:Conversations about queerness in global education often stop at risk. This session does not. \nInstead\, it examines what global education gains when queerness is treated as knowledge rather than something to manage. Using Respectful Disruption Leadership\, presenters explore how queer realities surface hard truths about power\, mobility\, belonging\, and decision-making across borders. \nThis session centers clarity over comfort and responsibility over silence. It invites leaders to reflect on how integrity shows up when systems are designed for complexity rather than avoidance. \nSession Goals\nParticipants will:\nStop treating queerness as a liability and recognize it as a powerful source of global and cultural knowledge that exposes how systems really work.\nName the power dynamics we avoid\, examining how identity\, borders\, and belonging decide who gets to move freely\, who must explain themselves\, and who is rendered invisible.\nEngage in respectful disruption with integrity\, grappling with what leadership demands when global education refuses simple answers or safe neutrality.

SUMMARY:An International Pedagogy of Melancholy @ NAFSA Region VI
DESCRIPTION:In her book\, Teaching Queer: Radical Possibilities for Writing and Knowing\, Stacey Waite writes that learning is akin to grieving as learners discover that the world is not what they thought it to be. In this process\, they lose their sense of certainty (p. 46). International education is not exempt from melancholic experiences. In fact\, international educational programs are full of moments where we come face-to-face with ideas and experiences that remind us that the world is different than we had ever imagined it to be. \nIn this session\, participants will receive a crash course in queer pedagogy and a pedagogy of melancholy. We will brainstorm moments of melancholy that our international students and our study abroad students face during their programs\, and we will strategize on methods for supporting students through these moments of grief and learning. \nLearning Objectives: \nRecall a definition of a pedagogy of melancholy.\nIdentify moments of melancholia that their international students and/or study abroad students experience in their programs.\nStrategize on methods\, materials\, and programs that can support international and study abroad students navigate the grieving process.

SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ Responses to Repression
DESCRIPTION:Attacks on LGBTQ+ people are on the rise\, fueled by national hate groups pushing for the freedom to discriminate without consequence. Trans\, non-binary\, and queer communities are facing increasing levels of stigma\, violence\, and systemic barriers. A wave of anti-trans legislation is targeting basic rights\, seeking to block access to safe restrooms\, gender-affirming healthcare\, participation in athletics\, and the ability to update identity documents. It is relentless and constantly shifting. \nWhile this may seem like a new kind of discrimination\, the truth is that we have been here before. We are not starting from scratch\, and we are not going anywhere. We have a history of resistance. \nIn this one-hour interactive session\, we’ll explore what we can learn from LGBTQ+ history to better support our communities today. This session is for anyone committed to protecting and uplifting LGBTQ+ people\, and to creating fair\, inclusive\, and welcoming spaces. Join us to hear how we’re responding to current challenges\, and to exchange ideas and strategies with others doing this work. \nThis session will: \n\nExpand your understanding of the variety of identities\, communities\, experiences\, strengths\, and barriers among the LGBTQ+ community\nExplore the history of anti-LGBTQ+ oppression — and the powerful ways our communities have resisted and survived\nLearn practical tools from both recent and long-standing movements for LGBTQ+ survival\, advocacy\, and resistance\, including AIDS activism\, 20th-century organizing\, current trans-led responses to anti-trans legislation\, and participants’ own lived experiences\nPractice everyday allyship skills and strategies for supporting one another across differences of race\, gender\, immigration experience\, socioeconomic status\, etc.\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, June 24th\, 2025 from 1-2 pm eastern time\nWhere: on Zoom\nCost: Free\, registration required

SUMMARY:Fatness Takes Flight: Supporting Body Diversity on International Programs
DESCRIPTION:Body diversity is a vital (and often overlooked) topic in diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) efforts for international education.
