Know Your Rights
Editor’s Note: The Lesbigay SIG and its members cannot advise on these matters, but we would encourage you to use the resources listed. We also recommend that should you be contacted by the authorities that you should consider consulting with a lawyer.
In the wake of the September 11, 2001, tragedy the American Civil Liberties Union has released a pamphlet on January 2, 2002, titled, “Know Your Rights: What to Do If You’re Stopped by the Police, the FBI, the INS or Customs Service.” The pamphlet contains information for citizens and non-citizens alike and is intended for those who feel at risk of being questioned or detained. According to the ACLU, “None of the advice in the pamphlet is meant to stop people from cooperating with proper law enforcement investigations.”
