International Education Professionals

Get Involved with the Rainbow SIG

Colleagues from all areas of international education are encouraged to be involved in the Rainbow SIG. LGBTQ professionals and Allies are welcome to contribute to the Rainbow SIG. If you would like to become a member, please complete the on-line membership form. Check our list of upcoming events to see what sessions and events will be happening at NAFSA and other international education conferences. Contact a member of the leadership team if you have any questions about the Rainbow SIG.  Consider writing an article for the SIGnals Newsletter.

Connect with Colleagues

The Rainbow SIG offers LGBTQ international educators and Allies an opportunity to connect with each other. It provides an opportunity for colleagues to discuss issues of sexual orientation and gender identity within the profession. It also an opportunity for colleagues who are interested in supporting LGBTQ students to share ideas and resources. Rainbow SIG members are able to connect in person at the NAFSA Annual Conference and Expo and at other events throughout the year. They are also able to reach out for resources and to share information through the Rainbow SIG listserv.

Advising and Supporting LGBTQ Students

We have sought to identify strategies and resources to help advisors and administrators counsel international students and education abroad students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. Our bibliography has been compiled over a number of years, and it is expanded regularly. Colleagues from around the world have shared copies of flyers and advising resource materials. The lists of organizations and links are intended to facilitate access to additional resources and information. View our individual pages for Advising International Students and Advising Education Abroad Students. Rainbow SIG members are encouraged to support and promote the Rainbow Scholarship for LGBTQI students.

Members of the Rainbow SIG and other colleagues regularly present LGBTQ-focused sessions and workshops at international education conferences. These sessions are announced on the Rainbow SIG website ahead of the NAFSA Annual Conference and Expo and other conferences. Participation in these sessions and workshops is a great opportunity for international education professionals at all levels to build their knowledge and competencies in LGBTQ issues.

We welcome your comments and encourage you to inform us of additional resources that might be added to the site.
